Truck Technician Training | Thunder Funding-1

When OEMs improve and upgrade their product offerings, new diagnostic procedures are required. This means your truck technicians need to stay up-to-date on troubleshooting best practices. In our opinion, investing in ongoing technician training should be a part of any carrier’s training program.

Technicians need to understand how to troubleshoot the various types of equipment a fleet operates. Different models of trucks function and break down differently than others, so it’s important your technicians are knowledgeable on how to fix all the vehicles in your fleet.

Training can be done in a variety of ways. It’s up to you to mix-and-match the ones that work best for your budget and your team. Here are some suggestions for how you can improve your truck technician training:

OEM Online Training and Webinars

When combined with more in-depth webinars and training videos, OEM online training programs are a great resource for carriers and their technicians. Just be sure your technicians are focusing their efforts on a new equipment’s subsystems, like after-treatment systems or engine diagnostics. Webinars are great because technicians can ask questions, interact directly with the trainer and have a more engaging — and memorable — learning experience.

On-Site OEM Training

This one is, by far, the most effective form of training simply because it’s interactive and hands-on. Instructors can demonstrate a procedure and then give technicians the opportunity to try the process out for themselves. Trainers can offer immediate support and explain the difference between the old equipment technicians are used to working on versus the new technology.

Technician Mentoring

Who doesn’t love a little mentorship? Engaging with less experienced technicians and supporting them with ongoing technical development via mentors is always a good idea. Newly graduated technicians may be taught all the latest diagnostics procedures and processes, but they lack the hands-on experience of more senior technicians.

Carriers who take advantage of all the forms of training available are setting themselves and their technicians up for long term success. Technicians that are trained on the latest troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures can help reduce costs, keep drivers safe, and ensure maximum uptime.
